I had always had female dogs, so years ago when our daughter was little she had a mixed breed from the time he was apup he never lifted his leg. Then when Odie was a baby he squatted all the time too but then when he saw his first male dog lift his leg to pee that was it. It was like a light bulb went on in his tiny head, " like that's how I'm supposed to do it" I guess sometimes it just might take another male dog to show them. Today the wind was terrible so when my babies went out to potty, Odie squatted and into the wind too. LOL
