The easiest way to detangle the dogs coat is to hold the hair between your finger and thumb down by the skin, start combing (not brushing) from the tip of the hair to the skin. By hold the hair you are working on close to the skin you will not be pulling on the dog's hair, which hurts them and makes them HATE grooming. Use a steel dog comb. After you have removed all the tangles you can then brush the dog. I've used this method for over 25 years, I don't use detangler or conditioner as they tend to make the coat too oily. Comb the dog's hair when it is dry not wet, then bath the dog, let the dog dry or blow dry the dog and then brush him/her out. You can then use a finishing spray if you like.

Most new yorkie owners over bathe their dogs which dries out their coats and makes it matt even worse. You really shouldn't have to bath the dog more than once every three weeks unless he/she is outside rolling in the dirt.

Do however wash their eyes with a warm cloth every night.

Good luck.
