You offer him something he likes better than what you are taking away. So if he has a bone, bring him his favorite treat, tell him the command "drop or give it", when he drops the bone, praise, reward, let him eat the treat and then give him back the bone.

It teaches him surrendering the bone gets him something even better and that you aren't trying to steal it from him.

Just be careful, if it seems like he is going to bite you, you might need help from a trainer.


I will do this tomorrow and let you know, he is a bit gruuhhhish with me if I try to even take a stuffed toy away. He was just not trained to surrender, that is the problem when we take older puppies
