Yes they can absolutley live together. A pit is just like any other dog. You go through the intro stages and monitor them from there. My parents have pitts and I got there all the time. I got my dad a Shih Tzu a few years back and there are no problems.
As with any dogs you watch their temperment. I don't worry about the reputation of a Pitt...it's about knowing your dog.
