I actually have one of each.
My ADHD is VERY VERY hyper active, you have to tell him OVER & OVER to do something and alot of times physically take him to do it and of course a list of other things as well..... My ADHD takes Concerta and has since Kindergarten, he is now in 6th grade. BEST devridion we could have ever made for him. He is able to be calm & concentrate on class, teacher and finish work... makes good grades. You can DEFINATELY tell when he hasnt had his pill or it has worn off. AAAHHH... I will say that way back when they started him on meds they tried him on the Ritalin... it only lasted about 4 hrs and my son was an emotional wreck... the concerta has never been like that.

MyADD... he is very day dreamy, figity.... He is also on Concreta but it works opposite on him. Makes him pay atention longer. He has been on meds since 4th gade, I think and he is now in 7th.

Your doctor would be the one to determine if your son has one or the other. There are forms that teachers & parents have to fill out in order for the doctor to make the diagnosis.... the answers will help make the diagnosis or lack there of...
