I really have no answers except if their fecals are coming back normal (are they?) then it must be the food.

Have you tried pumpkin to firm it up (this also has the opposite effect for future reference...)?

Beet pulp can harden stools. It is found in a few dogs foods but none of them (as far as I remember) are any good.
