She loves canned tuna and gets really excited when we just take it out of the cupboard, she gets beef hotdogs and cottage cheese too.

A diet of entirely people food (with supplements) is perfectly fine for a dog. The problem is the kind of food that is fed. Cottage cheese is fine but hotdogs are not.

Here are the rules I go by (Ellie does get homecooked food...no dog food):
No chocolate
No onion
No or very limited garlic
No salty meat (can cause kidney damage if given too much)
No fatty meats (pancreatitis)
Nothing spicy
Nothing with hydrogenated oil (as much as possible)
Very limited refined sugar
No macedamia (sp?) nuts
No grapes or raisins
No or very limited tomato

I'm sure I'm missing some.
