Default Very much wanting a Yorkie

Hi, I am new to this forum, but not new to having animal family members.

I am married and mommy to one dog (age 13), two cats (ages 11 and 5) and two horses (ages 25 and 19). I have always rescued my pets.

In Jan of '05, I had to put down one of my dogs, age 12 and diabetic for seven years. He was a little guy and my buddy. I am still heartbroken.

I have researched many small breeds and decided upon a Yorkie as my next dog. Because I have always rescued my pets, I would this time like to adopt a puppy from a reputable breeder.

Here's my issue: I also have a three-year-old son. Now, I know better than most folks how children and pets can or cannot mix. I also am aware of how many Yorkie breeders are concerned with placing a tiny dog in a home that also has a toddler.

However, ours is not like most homes. Weeks before we brought our son home from the hospital, we prepped our pets on having a baby around. We followed Brian Kilcommons' advice on bringing a baby home. We had great success with his advice.

We have taught our son well since birth. He knows he needs to treat our pets with kindness. "No touch eyes, no touch tail, no touch ears, just pat on back" is a litany he recites often. As a toddler, of course, he does get rambunctious at times. When he does, I put the cats in our bedroom behind a babygate. My large-breed dog goes into another room on her bed, also behind a gate. We then distract our son and later bring everyone back out. My animals are not "stuck" in a room for hours, nor is my son inhibited.

Also, we always supervise our son and our pets and never leave them alone together. And I do mean always.

I have references from vets, vet specialists, breeders, groomers, trainers, rescue people, etc., on how well I have cared for all my pets, the great pains I take with them, and how I manage any special needs or requirements.

So, how and where do I find a Yorkie breeder in the NJ/NY/CT area who is willing to 1)judge me individually, 2)visit my home, 3)see how we manage things, and 4)check references? And then decide whether or not to sell me a puppy?

It's interesting...I talked, for example, with a breeder who has been breeding for 25 years. She has one 18-year-old and one 15-year-old human child. There children were toddlers at one time. I asked her how she handled things in her home with toddlers and Yorkies. She said, "Well..., that's different" and really didn't have an answer.

I can manage integrating a Yorkie into my home. I know it takes work. I will not just place a puppy on the floor with my large breed dog or underfoot with my child and just hope things work out.

Please, does anyone have any advice? My family and I really want a Yorkie puppy.

Thank you very much.
