Exactly what I was going to say. I doubt your neighbors would knowingly have left their dogs with an irresponsible friend. Having gone through several family emergencies in the last few months, I know that you often have little to no time to prepare.

Keep up the good work of caring for the shepard and let your neighbors know that next time they could ask you to watch their dogs or suggest that they ask a more responsible friend to care for their pets.
