You are absolutely right. It seems to only be done for the sole purpose of meeting supply and demand and to make a quick buck. There is no standard being met so it doesn't really matter what type dogs the breeders start out with. And yes, these cross bred dogs can have genetic and cosmetic problems even if the parents didn't. I cringe everytime I hear the phrase "designer dog," but then again, if I paid the kind of money for a cross bred dog that I see some of these being sold for, I wouldn't want to call it a "mutt" either.
