If you want him to get used the crate, then I would crate him. You may need to get up during the night to take him out, but that doesn't last too long.
I've used the crate with all my dogs and I am really glad I have. They also have 2 x-pens and dog porta crib too and I use all of them. I don't use the porta crib much cause the tend to chew it and jump out.
