Max is probably itchy because of allergies, low zinc (because of his liver) or another liver related problem. Does his food have corn in it? This might be causing it. You can type in "pruritis" on the liver shunt group and you will get results or just ask this question over there. I know one person in particular there has dealt with the itchies.
Can you ask your vet about switching to Denosyl that you buy online? It should be the same. How about emailing the company?
