I know what you mean. I haven't been to a circus since I was a very small girl. Even then, I found it oddly sad. But I do remember road side "zoos" (a bear in a cage) as tourist attractions on our vacations that always broke my heart.
A CD exchange sounds like a great idea. I don't buy the books on CD tho.
. I belong to Audible Bookclub and load them onto my iPod. (It's only $14.95 a month for the basic plan, and I think you get two books a month.) Even if you don't want to join, I'm sure that you could go to the site and listen to the previews (some readers are somewhat annoying). Memoirs of a Geisha was another great audible book. It was waaaaay better than the movie - another one I was sad when it ended.
