I use it as
part of the diet for mine, but from what you describe, it doesn't seem as if it is an optimal choice for yours. You may want to consider cutting back and supplementing with a different food, or cutting it out altogether for something that will work better to suit his needs. In any event, do it gradually to allow him time to adjust.
