I agree 100%. The cost of food, grooming, etc. are a very small part of the total cost of owning a dog over its lifetime. Keep in mind that as your dog ages, he will need more frequent vet visits and most likely will develop health issues that may require medication.

Starting with a puppy from a reputable breeder who knows her lines and does genetic and health screening before breeding is the most important thing. Spend the extra money now to get a puppy from a breeder like that and avoid being tempted by "bargain" puppies who may cost you a fortune in vet bills over its lifetime. Be sure and get a bile acids test on your puppy before you bring him home to make sure he is free of liver disease.
