You can only free feed an animal if it does not overeat. It sounds like your dog would overeat by free-feeding so I don't think that would be a good idea. There could be a medical problem causing him to be so hungry all the time. Hyperthyroidism is a posibility, although uncommon in dogs. He could also have worms. As long as the amount he's eat is keeping him at a healthy weight, I'd continue with what you are doing. Feeding more will only make him gain weight, which isn't healthy. If he's skinny though, you can feed a little more.
