Default Knee Problems

Roufianna jumped from the helm seat of our boat to the slippery fiberglass floor and immediately began favoring her left hind leg. The floor is a bit slippery and very hard. When the limping did not abate after two days we brought her to the vet. She would walk ok most of the time but hold the leg up occassionally. Our vet, after moving her knee cap around a bit, said she has "trick" knees. And that it is quite common in the smaller breeds. Our baby is 6.8 lbs. and in otherwise great shape. He felt that we shouldn't breed her as we had planned to when she turned two yrs. of age not to perpetuate the problem. After less then a week on anti -inflammatory meds. she is her old self again (thank God).
Question??? How big a problem is this? I requested a more standard rather then a mini from the breeder hoping to avoid some problems... alas...
Any input greatly appreciated.
