I have a cat that's very shy of men. She's never gotten over it and she's 16 years old. We think when we moved from Germany, the men on the plane tortured. When my grandparents went and picked her they said "Oh YOU want that crying cat!" with an attitude and practically shoved her carrier into their arms. When my grandfather got her out the carrier and carried her downstairs she FREAKED out and clawed him from one end of his arm to the other and he had to be taken to the ER. She hates him to this day and won't come near him. She also hates my husband with a passion and hisses at him even if he is across the room. She is leary of my cousin and was best around my father.

Unfortunately, it does sound like she was abused and I wish you all the best. I would try to keep as calm around her as possible and have your husband spend some one on one time with her like offering her treats. Maybe even let him be her primary caregiver for awhile? If he's the one taking her out to potty, giving her food, playing with her, taking her for walks, giving her treats, etc. she'll start to see that he's not so bad after all. Just tell him to take it easy with her and be understanding. She'll come around in time :-) Good luck!
