You can mix a small amount of laundry detergent in a bowl of water (by small amount I mean about a tablespoon or a little less), add a tiny bit of liquid fabric softner (this keeps it from sudsing too much). Add this to your water resevoir on your machine and finish filling up with water. After you are done rinse your water tank out really well and refill with plain water and go over the carpet again to make sure you rinse the other solution out. A friend of DH's who used to clean carpets for a living told me this secret. It really works well!
