They are much bigger than Yorkies. Not very tall but much longer than tall, think of a big dog on very short legs.Similar build to a Basset but with a dense long coat that sweeps the ground & ears very like a Papillon. they are only about 10 inches tall but, head to tail are about 42 inches long.
They are also heavy, though the weight isn't included in their standard in the UK, they are well over 30 lb & some of the dogs can be bigger. Their deep bark is pretty impressive
The temperament is completely different to Yorkies, being a proper terrier rather than a toy dog. But they are most notable for being very much a "one man dog". Very loyal to their owner, but extremely reserved with strangers. If someone comes to visit, the Yorkies are all over them making friends but my Skyes will just sit at a distance, watching but not approaching, weighing them up. But they're not aggressive at all, or feisty like Jack Russells, just extremely wary & reserved.
I don't know if they are at risk in America, I know they have been popular in the past over there, but they are on the Vulnerable Native Breed list at the Kennel Club.
Here you would pay about £500 for a puppy, the same as a Yorkie & most other pedigree breeds here.
I hope this link works to the breed standard at the Kennel Club
The one on the illustration is black, but the lighter colours have black points....ears, muzzle etc, which looks lovely. Mine are the lighter colours, i have creams & light greys, all with the black ears & points.
