CKC is a registry that allows any dog that "looks" like a purebred to be registered. People can take mixes that look purebred, and register them with CKC... Also, in general, pups around here that are CKC are cheaper...
I would definitely try to find a way to see the dad of this pup, if your friend doesn't have pictures and/or videos of him. If none of that is possible, I would wonder why the sire is being kept secretive...
As to the color issue, if it is just the pics that make him look brownish in the face/legs, then he should stay black... My 3 year old black girl is ink black still.. no fading, nothing. I don't think the blacks will turn gray with age... maybe just around the muzzle area a little. The one my mom had, and then the one I had when I was a kid were over 12 when they passed on, and they were black still.
