All the advise people have discussed is really good!
To answer your question, it took my Aira 3 weeks before she would actually go the pad on her own, without us having to place her on it. We got her at 12 weeks and one huge advantage with the training is that I was home on study leave for the first month we had her so could focus on potty training all day. If you are away during the day it might take a little longer for your pup to catch on.
Aira is now 5 1/2 months and she is about 98% with peeing on the pad and 90% with pooing on it and knows she can do both outside. Until recently she would hold her pee and poo on walks until she was back inside and could go on the pad.
