I put finger nail polish on the bottoms of their paw. Each one had a different color. I kept replacing the nail polish as it would wear off. This is how I knew who was who. I put the nail polish on right after they were born & weighed so I knew who was 1, 2, 3, and 4. I know this worked well for me. Once the puppies got about 5 or 6 weeks old, I put different colored collors on them.
