Try using kids detangler from Lorial. It works great on my long hair yorkie. Her rearend hair gets matted because if it wavy. I know that it really helped me. Good luck getting her hair long. I think that once it is longer it gets easier but it is hard to get there.

P.S.
I love the straitening iron idea. I have thought about that, but have never done it. I would use a hair portector that I use for my own hair though. Don't want anymore breakage then she already causes herself. Such a tomboy sometimes. LOL
