We raised 6 sons, all of whom had to earn their own money and also buy their own car if they wanted one. I think when they are taught this type of responsibility, then they appreciate what they have a lot more. I also taught all of my sons how to cook and clean and they all went on to become very well rounded adults and the ones that are married are wonderful husbands and fathers who are teaching their kids the same responsibilities.
