My guy sleeps in his crate every night. Believe me, it is NOT a bad thing to crate a dog. If you are thinking it's inhumane, that is just way off. The only concern I would have is what has your dog been sleeping in for the last 2 years?? If he/she is used to sleeping in the bed, then it would be a hard transition.
It is NOT a negative thing to put a dog in a crate, it's that natural "cave" instinct that dogs have. I also think it's fine for the dog to sleep w/ their owners if they chose that, I just want to point out to OP that it is NOT a punishment for them to sleep in a crate.
