  I tried squirt guns, but they just don't make them like they did when I was a kid!!  They leak something terrible, and the "bazooka" ones would knock a yorkie over!  
 
  
I got my bottle at wal-mart - standard spray bottle, but in a lovely color to match my decor.  

   You can turn the nozzle to make it mist or stream.  Depends on how far away Coby is which I use.  I spray it pretty close to the face (but avoid the eyes).  Since it's just water, it shouldn't hurt them.  But if straight water isn't doing the trick, I've heard of adding vinegar or lemon juice to the water (it would be similar to the citronella collars), but then you would need to be very careful to avoid the eyes.   
Some days I think I just need a holster for my water bottle 

  but it really does work and doesn't frighten or hurt them, just distracts them.  It works when my two dogs' wrestling matches get out of hand or if he's jumping too much, etc.
