I start mine out by putting the harness on in the house and letting them walk around with it on for a couple of hours each day. Then when they're use to that I'll attach the leash, and repeat letting them walk around for a few hours each day. Once they're use to that we go for walks in the front yard where they basically lead and I follow. Next step is going for walks. It's always worked for me.
