Usually, a high protein content is good for dogs (unless he has a compromised liver condition). Your puppy might just look "fat" because he's growing-my Milli was a little roly poly looking thing for a few weeks when we got her! We used to call her our "chubby cupcake", haha!

Just like human babies, I think they tend to round out before they grow taller (longer). Make sure he's getting fed the proper amount, and is getting enough exercise, and you won't need to worry about him being overweight.
Petsmart does carry many of the brands I mentioned above, including Royal Canin and Blue Buffalo. Canidae and Chicken soup are not available at Petsmart (at least in my area), but a locally owned shop in your area may carry those and others.
