I used to think it's cruel but now not so much. I know they don't ask for it but babies also don't ask for their ears to be pierced and they forget about the pain, it's very quick. My mom had my ear's pierced when i was 9 months old, and not only 1 hole in each ear but 3. Now at 20 they never close, never hurt, never got infected and im thankful cause i don't remember the pain and i like them. Mother's pierce their baby's ears all the time. Ppl at my age now want to do it but it hurts them and takes time to heal. Anyway i think it can be used as identifying purposes also, like a tattoo. I knew a girl that had her dog's ear pierced and he left it there, didn't mess with it. I don't think it hurts them much but if you dog doesn't like things on their ears that could be a problem. You would have to train them to leave it on.
