Actually, I would never put one in Chloe's ear; I too would be afraid of it ripping. She likes to flick her bows, and she'd probably rip the earring out of her ear too.
But...on it being cruel or "not natural" or "they can't choose if they want it or not", well I agree that is just like tail docking--same thing. So I don't think it's cruel. Some breeds have their ears cut.
