I would not want to sell heartache either. I researched my breeder before I bought from her and I believe my dogs to have come from good healthy stock. I want to develop my own line and work on improving it for my own satisfaction, I have no interest in showing.
Just because a dog is not of show quality, does not mean that it has health issues. In fact from what I understand many champion lines develop health issues just because of the selective breeding. Which is not to say that all show dogs have health issues.
On this forum, the term reputable, responsible breeder is used synonomously with show breeder. Not all show breeders are reputable and honest, and not all non show breeders are disreputable and irresponsible.
I enjoy breeding but do not have the desire or the money to show, does that make me a bad peron. |
I don't know of any reputable show breeders that will sell puppies for more money because of more champions in the pedigree. Actually anyone buying a pet puppy from a show breeder will get the pedigree on that puppy chock full of champions anyway. There is no puppies with no champions behind them, reputable show breeders don't work that way.
For anyone that would qualify to get a show dog from a reputable show breeder, then the price on that dog would be higher along with the guarantee that it is a show dog. I cannot speak for show breeders taht are not reputable as I have not had dealings with them and couldn't name them anyway. I am sure they exist but I pay no attention to them whatsoever.
I don't know of a byb that doesn't sell puppies for higher prices if that litter has champions in the pedigree, more champions, higher the price, which is why there is such a drive for byb's to get a hold of good lines with many champions. Also leading to most show breeders now spay/neutering rather than trusting non breeding contracts which doesn't stop a buyer from registering with a bogus registry thereby selling allegedly registered puppies.
It is very true that not all show breeders are reputable which is a pity. But I also don't know of any factor in life that has reputable and non reputable people involved.
As to whether or not you are a bad person because you are interested in breeding and selling puppies and not showing, you are the best person to answer that question. I guess if you don't feel the need to defend yourself, you would be happy with your choice.
I had a call last night from someone looking for a female to just breed. I have no intention of someone getting a dog from me to just breed when I have put all the years, money, work, championships, won the trust of other show breeders for their lines, for someone to come along to just breed and sell puppies for profit likely to others to just breed perhaps even into crossbreeding to sell puppies.
My choice makes sense to me and I do not in anyway feel I need to defend it, only give my point of view as to why I do as I do.
