Tina, I wouldn't worry about the side rails if I were you. It's recommended for large dogs but I've never found it necessary for my little ones. If they make her uncomfortable I would remove them. You'll be spending alot of time watching out for the pups after they are born so I'm sure you'll notice if there's a problem.
