AOL is NOT a free service, contrary to what your brother tells you. They only provide email services for free. You have to pay monthly for their dial up internet service.

On another note, AOL will also charge you to use their browser if you already have high speed internet. If your service is around $15 a month, you are probably using this useless feature. You don't need AOL in that case; you can simply use Internet Explorer or Firefox as your browser. If this is your predicament, then you would be justified in canceling your AOL service, as they are not providing anything of value. You can retain your email, even when canceling AOL service.
