You can get AOL for free if you have another way to access the internet. You can keep your screenname and email accounts for free.
I just did this myself when I got DSL. If you want to change your AOL to free go to Your Account and then under change your password section you can change your account to the free one. They don't make it easy, they kinda hide it, or you can just call them (you have to hold forever, though). It will take effect in your next billing cycle and it doesn't take off any premium service you might have like AOL call alert. Hope this helps.
