Not to be an ettique freak....but....the rule of thumb is to cover the cost of dinner for yourself and your date/guest. However, if someone you are close to is having and extravagent event and you cannot afford what they have chosen to spend, you should just use your best judgement and give what you can afford to do within your budget. Your boss should know you well enough if he is inviting you to his wedding that i am sure he will appreciate whatever gift you give. Most people who I have seen get married don't get bent out of shape by the dollar amounts unless they are really cheap....like $20 or something. They are really just glad to have to you at the event.
