When we took our road trip with the girls I also packed the X-pen with us. It was great at rest aras and at fast food places so the girls could stretch their legs. Neither of them likes to potty while on a leash and we use the X-pen in our yard. It allowed us to get comfortable while eating lunch/dinner (kind-of picnic style) near them rather than leaving them in the car.
I use the Snoozer Lookout car seats. My girls simply love them and lay right down while traveling. We tried other options such as a carrier and different seats/straps and they hated them all, but from the first time in their Snoozer they were great!!!
