i walk morgan on a retractable leash now. When we started walking when she was only a few months old i had her on a 4 foot nylon leash, and taught her to 'walk with me' on the sidewalk only. I use the Caesar 'shhht' sound while on walks. If she gets too far ahead, if she goes on people's lawns, or if she notices another person or dog and gets excited enough not to listen i 'shhht' her. Now when we go on walks with the retractable leash i don't have to lock it, and rarely have to press down on the button to stop her from going out to far. she stays on my right side most of the time (i tried training her on my left but for some reason she likes the right, go figure) and doesn't go on people's lawns. its so much easier to walk her like this. When i pet sit for people and they have retractable leashes i usually have to lock them because the small dogs tend to take off to the end of the leash and think they can pull you down the street. very unsafe.
