I use a 4 foot leash and hook the retractable leash to the 'handle' of the leash (using a round key chain type thing) so when I lock the retractable leash at its shortest part, the pup still has 4 foot to play with ... (did I explain that correctly??)
My dogs never really pull on the leash ...
