I don't think it's any law in CA that they have to be in a container. I think what the law is is that an animal can't be a distraction while you're driving. I used to drive ALL the time with one of my birds sometimes on my shoulder and usually on the top of the back seat (I KNOW, I KNOW....if i'd gotten in a wreck...but I never did, and he was used to driving in the car) and I had been stopped by cops many times (yes, I'm a stellar driver and they just wanted to commend me on it
) and they NEVER said a word other than "that's a beautiful cockatoo".
Also, I've been stopped here too, with Max in the car not in a container and he even started BARKING at the cops at the window
.....and they were stopping me for stepping on it to get around a truck who was annoying me and wouldn't let me in front of him, so I just gunned it and in a flash, there I was..in front of him. Unfortunately, all of a sudden I was in front of an unmarked police car
. Anyway, they were pretty nice, told me if they had a car like mine, they'd be going fast too
, but to slow down and drive safely. No ticket. Sometimes you get lucky. Sometimes they're jerks.
