You could try doing what I do with my cats to get some really great shots.

Use a toy! (or treat)

Make the pup stay, then hold the toy up above the camera a bit so that the pup seems to be making eye contact with the camera.

It also helps if your camera has a feature where you hold down the button and it continuously takes shots. You're bound to get at least one good one!
