I, too, am an admin on another forum. I have found the same things there as well sometimes. I just delete nasty posts and move on. That board is not nearly as busy as this one though, so its a bit easier to manage. I try to not get involved in emotional threads or ones that could turn nasty... but I recently found myself in one (you all probably know) I try to handle the nastiness by educating people, not by being nasty back. I would never stoop to their level.
