Good luck with your little boy. He's very cute. Can't wait to hear what you decided to name him. The Innova food is an excellent choice. Since he's a baby i would leave the food out all day long or feed him 3 times a day, this way you won't have to worry about hypoglycemia. Don't worry about exercising him to much. Let him walk and run as much as he wants. With small dogs you don't have to worry about over doing it, and compromising their bone development.
Wait till he has all his distemper vaccines before letting him play with other dogs or before taking him places where other dogs have been. You don't want him to pick up something along the way and get sick. After he's had all his distemper vaccines you should take him everywhere with you so he gets used to different situations and different people. The kids may have scared him so next time if you see kids coming towards you pick him up. Then tell the kids to walk calmly over to him and let him sniff them before they start petting him. Let only one kid at a time pet him, too many kids can be overwhelming for such a small puppy. After he's comfortable with the kids you can put him down and let him mingle. My yorkie LOVES everything and everyone, sometimes a little too much. LOL i had her everywhere when she was little. The most critical period of dog socialization is up to 16 weeks. During this period you should try to expose him to all sorts of situations. Also work with him at home by rolling him over on his back while playing, putting your fingers in his ears and mouth, play with his toes and feet. basically 'torture' him so that he gets used to everything and he'll let you do anything you need to do to him (cut his nails, brush his teeth, groom him, and this helps with vet and grooming visits)
Neutering can actually be done as soon as the testicles have descended but with smaller dogs its recommended to wait until 5-6 months old because by then they should have more weight on them. |
Thanks for all the information. I have been leaving food out for him all day, but sometimes he forgets to eat I think, so I have to make sure he does. If I dunk my and in his food dish and hold it there, he is more inclined eat and sometimes I feed him out of my palm when he's too excited to eat. That usually works.
His nails definitely need cutting right now. I'm taking him to the vet tomorrow and hopefully she can do it for me. He needs to have a stool sample tested as well and go on something called revolution apparently. My vet said that all puppies do it. I've never had a puppy of my own before, so it's kind of new to me.
He's due for his second shot in about 3 weeks. I've been touching his feet as much as possible, because I heard that some Yorkies don't like that, so I'm trying to get him used to it. I worked with him today on sitting and staying and bribing him with treats. He did really well.
I want to have him neutered before he is fully mature so that he can get all of the benefits.
