I, like you, had this same question not too long ago. I wanted to switch mine from the previous Science Diet Lamb and Rice to a better, more natural food. From all of the research that I have done, there are 3 options that I would consider:

Innova (several options), right now I am trying out the Innova EVO small bites
Canidae (three options)
California Natural (several options)

No matter what you read on here, I would do your own research, make sure you look at the ingredients of the dog foods. They should not have any of the following: by-products, "animal fat", soy, corn, and other fillers. Also, if you can't pronounce it, you probably don't want them to eat it!! The ingredients should be mostly protein then vegetables and some fruit, no carbs or fillers if you can help it.

I would also talk to a couple different LOCAL (not Petsmart or Petco, etc.) pet stores to see what they say as well. Good luck in your search!
