Good question! My last litter did that. I did start listening better and when I heard the russle of the pad I would shake a tin can with coins and it worked. They have to be distracted. I only figured out to do this right before they went to their forever homes. Hopefully this new litter won't tear the pads up, but I'm prepared if they do.
