A opinion from a kid! Ok, I see that most of you are mothers and are completely appalled by piercings. But let me tell you, be happy it is only a piercing!!
When I was about 15 (I'm 21 now), I wanted to get the upper part of my ear pierced. My mom didn't think it was appropriate and I didn't get it done. I was always the good kid, good grades, church, the whole bit. As soon as I turned 18, I got my nose pierced and a tattoo (a quarter size butterfly on my foot). I now have 2 small tattoos, my nose pierced and my Monroe (a stud piercing where Marilyn Monroe had a mole). Despite my piercings and tattoos (and yes, this is meant to be sarcastic) I am studying to be a paralegal, I have a full time job, I have lived on my own (in Southern California, where a 1 bedroom apartment it $1500/ mo) for 2 years now, and I pay for EVERYTHING on my own. I do regeret my tattoos, they are permanent. However, my piercings, which are on my face, can be taken out, and no one will ever know. And no, I do not blame my tattoos on my mom who wouldn't let me get my ear pierced.
I know that in your generations, piercings were a horrible thing, and even though you don't like it or agree, they are very common now. Let them get it done, let them feel like they are rebelling. Otherwise, they will rebel in other ways that can affect them permenantely- like drinking, or drugs, or tattoos. Basically, get over it... its just a hole... they will most likely be over it in a few months anyways! |
