I did this to my mom when I was 18 and went away to college. I'm 27 now, so I can see both sides.
Her main issue was the image. To her, people with tattoos and piercings were weird and in the military (tattoos) or prison, etc. So she flipped out when she saw my piercing. I'd had it for a few months and took it out at that point. The first week was the worst, but then I returned to normal pretty much. They do sell plastic bar bells and other materials that are easier on the teeth so they don't get chipped. They also sell one that's the same color as your tongue so it's harder for other people to tell it's in there.
As for the generation gap.....it has become really popular to get pierced. Even for me, some of them are scary. The tongue piercing is a lot better than something ON her face that no one could miss. Or I've seen some pretty weird ones on peoples' arms or necks. I know you don't like it, but it could be worse. And.....at least it's not a tattoo. |
