Another thought:
Do any of the local news crews have a consumer watch-dog segment?
They can usually get something like this cleared up pretty quick----a law suit is private and can take quite some time--they are hoping it turns out that you don't want to spend the time or energy on it or that after the lawyer gets his fee, it's not worth it to you.
They will NOT want all the negativity that will come from a broadcast that shows them un-willing to take responsibility for what happened to you. Because if the outcome is good or bad the news segment will air it when they take up your cause.
I'd also write "letters to the editors" sections of local papers (CC'd to local and coporate offices of the store) to start getting things heated up in their direction as well.
