I think most animals with teeth have baby teeth that fall out and are replaced by adult teeth. Sometimes I clean the toothbrushes with antibacterial dish soap and rinse them good to clean them. I would think that if you keep the toothbrush pretty clean and use toothpaste for dogs, that it would lessen the bacteria. That's what I've heard anyway
