Usually I'm at work for 9-10 hours. Mine run free in the house. But I don't have kids so the evenings are spent with my boys. I have been known to turn down evening or weekend plans because that's my time with my boys. Not great for my social life, but I'd rather be at home spending time with them than doing most anything else. I think you can have healthy, socialized dogs even if you work long hours. I don't think they should be crated that long. I don't crate mine, but it's because I couldn't handle listening to them cry, it broke my heart. I want them to sleep with me. And who would guard the neighborhood from my front window if they were in a crate all day?
